Overview

Friendship Peak Expedition – A Premier Himalayan Climbing Experience in Himachal Pradesh
Friendship Peak (5,289 meters), located in the majestic Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh, is one of India’s most iconic trekking summits — the perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering in the Indian Himalayas. Perched above the stunning Solang Valley, just a short drive from Manali, this pyramid-shaped snow-capped mountain is a dream come true for those looking to graduate from trekking into the world of alpine expeditions.

This is not just a trek. It’s a true mountaineering expedition designed for climbers who want to test themselves in real alpine conditions without the heavy technical requirements of more advanced peaks. Over the course of this expedition, you’ll move through dramatically shifting landscapes — from lush coniferous forests and meadows to moraines, glaciers, and steep snow slopes. The route is filled with breathtaking views, rigorous training, and immersive learning — making it one of the most well-rounded mountaineering experiences in India.

Starting from the adventure capital of Manali, the trail leads through Solang, Dhundi, and Bakarthach, gradually taking you deeper into snow-covered alpine zones. Along the way, you’ll gain hands-on experience with essential mountaineering equipment like crampons, ice axes, ropes, and harnesses. You’ll participate in load ferrying, snow-craft practice, and summit planning — all vital aspects of any high-altitude expedition. The final summit push typically begins in the early hours before dawn, testing your stamina, mental focus, and determination as you make your way up the snow ridge to the top.

Standing atop Friendship Peak, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic 360-degree view of towering Himalayan giants — from the Dhauladhar to the Pir Panjal and even distant peaks of the Great Himalayan range. It’s a view — and a moment — that stays with you for life.

Despite its challenges, Friendship Peak is categorized as a non-technical trekking peak, which means you don’t need prior mountaineering experience to attempt it — just strong fitness, a resilient mindset, and a hunger for adventure. That’s why it remains a top choice for aspiring climbers, mountaineering students, and serious trekkers looking to level up.

Whether you’re preparing for tougher expeditions ahead or simply looking for a once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan climb, this expedition gives you a deep dive into expedition culture, alpine environments, and personal growth — all in a relatively compact and accessible format. With road access to the trailhead, minimal permit hassles, and well-established local infrastructure, it’s one of the most logistically feasible and richly rewarding climbs in the country.

At Outdoor Whisperer, we believe in doing this expedition the right way — small groups, experienced leadership, personalized attention, and solid safety systems. Whether you’re a first-time climber or an experienced trekker, we’ll guide you every step of the way on this unforgettable adventure.

Itinerary

Your journey begins in the bustling town of Manali — the hub for adventure seekers in Himachal Pradesh. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel and meet your expedition leader and fellow climbers. Post lunch, we conduct a comprehensive briefing covering the route, gear check, and high-altitude tips. You’ll also be given your technical equipment (if not already brought) and guided through how to pack efficiently.

If time permits, you can stroll around the Mall Road, pick up last-minute supplies, or visit local landmarks like Hadimba Temple. This is also a great time to mentally prepare for the physically demanding days ahead and begin acclimatizing to the altitude.

Altitude: 2,050 m
Activity: Arrival, expedition briefing, gear check, rest and explore Manali

After an early breakfast, we drive to Dhundi — the last motorable point in Solang Valley. From here begins our trek through dense coniferous forests, alongside the Beas River. The trail is scenic but gradually ascending, offering views of Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, and the Seven Sisters peaks.

We reach Bakarthach by afternoon, our campsite nestled in alpine meadows with dramatic backdrops. Here, you'll get your first taste of mountain living in tents. The altitude gain is noticeable, so hydration and rest are important tonight.

Drive: ~21 km (1.5 hours)
Trek: ~5 km (3 hours)
Altitude Gain: 1,250 m

Today’s trek is relatively short but gains significant altitude. We leave the treeline behind and enter alpine zones with open meadows and views of surrounding snow-covered peaks. The route is steeper and rockier, with increasing snow presence as we get closer to Lady Leg — a sloped campsite named after a boulder resembling a bent leg.

The rest of the day is spent acclimatizing and doing light snow craft drills like walking in crampons and self-arrest basics, depending on the terrain condition. You’ll also start adjusting to thinner air as you approach 4,000 m.

Trek: ~4 km (3–4 hours)
Altitude Gain: ~600 m

Today we perform a load ferry — a critical part of mountaineering where climbers carry a portion of their gear to a higher camp, leave it there, and return to a lower camp to sleep. You’ll pack and carry selected items from your personal equipment and clothing in your rucksack and deposit them at Summit Camp (4,400 m) — a spacious, snow-covered plateau ideal for training and camping.

The trail involves a steep ascent over snow slopes and uneven terrain, giving you a hands-on feel for the summit push. After dropping off the gear and practicing essential snowcraft skills (like ice axe handling, walking on fixed lines, and using crampons), we descend back to Lady Leg for the night.

This climb is demanding but helps with acclimatization and gear prep. Don’t worry — tomorrow we return to Summit Camp, but you’ll only carry minimal gear then, as major loads stay stored.

Trek: ~4 km total (2 km each way)
Altitude Gain: ~500 m ascent; return to 3,900 m
Duration: 4–5 hrs round trip

With our main luggage already ferried yesterday, today we move lighter and more efficiently to Summit Camp. The climb still feels challenging, but the load is easier to manage. Expect early snow patches and exposure to sun and wind — proper layering and hydration are key.

Once we arrive at Summit Camp (4,400 m), we pitch tents and settle in for final rest before summit push. Dinner is served early (around 5–6 PM) to allow maximum rest before the midnight wake-up call. Tents are adjusted to accommodate three people per tent, optimizing space and warmth, as we don’t carry too many items up. Rest well — the big day awaits.

Trek: ~2 km (2–3 hours)
Altitude Gain: ~500 m

Summit push begins early, typically around 12 AM. We gear up with harnesses, crampons, headlamps, and ropes, and step out into the darkness. The cold is intense, but adrenaline keeps you warm. The route gradually steepens as we approach the summit ridge, with key sections protected by fixed ropes.

Reaching the summit of Friendship Peak (5,289 m) is a surreal moment — a wide 360° Himalayan panorama awaits you, including Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and more. Soak in the views, click a few photos, and begin the descent.

We halt briefly again at Summit Camp, hydrate and regroup, before continuing the descent back to Lady Leg. This day is long and tiring — be mentally prepared to carry your gear the entire day. A warm welcome, hot food, and a well-earned celebratory dinner await you at Lady Leg.

Trek: ~10–12 km total
Altitude Gain: ~889 m ascent, ~1,389 m descent
Duration: 10–12 hours

Your final trekking day. We descend from Lady Leg, retracing our path through Bakarthach and Dhundi. The trail feels familiar but your legs might still be sore from the summit. Take your time, and enjoy the forest sections and open meadows.

From Dhundi, our vehicles drive us back to Manali by 3–4 PM. You may choose to leave Manali the same evening via an overnight bus or stay back and depart the next day. Either way, the expedition officially concludes with a certificate distribution, and a group photo that seals your achievement.

Trek: ~9–10 km
Drive: ~21 km
Duration: 4–5 hrs trek + 1.5 hrs drive

While the expedition is generally completed in 7 days, we strongly recommend keeping Day 8 as a buffer in your plan. This day can be used for:

  • A second summit attempt (if weather or health issues prevented the first)
    • Recovery or extra acclimatization on the mountain
    • A relaxed day in Manali before heading home

If unused, you can explore cafes, visit the hot springs at Vashisht, or simply stroll through Old Manali’s markets. Your luggage can be kept at the hotel till your departure in the evening.

Please note: If this day is utilized — whether as a second summit attempt with food and tent stay in the mountains, or as an extra night in Manali with bed & breakfast — an additional fee of same amount will be charged. This covers basic logistical support and arrangements for the added day. Charges apply only if the day is actually used or is opted for during the booking. Refer to the Additional Expenses section below for further details.

If Day 8 is used, hotel accommodation or mountain camping (depending on the situation) will be arranged at an additional cost

Common Questions

This expedition is ideal for trekkers who’ve done multiple high-altitude treks and want to transition into mountaineering. It’s the perfect entry point into snow climbs and technical terrain with professional guidance and complete gear support.

Friendship Peak is rated as a difficult, non-technical expedition. It involves glacier walks, steep ascents on snow, crampon usage, and summit day pushes lasting up to 12 hours. Good fitness and mental resilience are key.

The expedition season is May to early July and September to mid-October. These periods offer more stable snow conditions, clear weather windows, and better access to summit ridges.

The route is about 35–40 km, depending on the campsite layouts and weather diversions. The expedition is typically 7–8 days long, including a buffer day.

Climbing permits from local authorities and forest permissions are required. All permits are handled by our team — you don’t need to worry about the paperwork.

Start training 6–8 weeks in advance. Include cardio (running, stair climbing), strength (especially legs and core), and 1–2 longer hikes with a loaded backpack.

While not mandatory, prior experience with snow treks or basic mountaineering helps. You’ll be trained to use snow boots, crampons, harness, and ice axe during the climb.

You’ll need trekking clothes, layering systems, personal toiletries, and a sturdy backpack. All technical gear (snow boots, crampons, helmet, harness, gaiters, carabiner, ice axe) is included in the expedition package. For a detailed list, see the “Things to Pack” section.

Strongly recommended. Poles help with stability on steep climbs and reduce knee impact while descending. Buy, don’t rent.

Yes. Items like trekking poles, jackets, and shoes (non-climbing) can be rented from us. Please notify us in advance.

From Manali to Lady Leg, mules will carry your duffel. For load ferry and summit day, you’ll carry your own essentials (~8–10 kg). Rucksack offloading is optional till base camp.

  • 1 night in a Manali hotel (Day 1)
  • 5 nights in alpine tents (Bakarthach, Lady Leg, Summit Camp)

If Day 8 is used, you either stay at the campsite or return to Manali (hotel)

Nutritious, freshly cooked meals — 3 per day — plus tea, coffee, soup, and energy snacks. Vegetarian, egg-based, and non-veg meals are offered depending on availability.

Yes. Hot water is served with meals and refills are available at camps. Carry purification tablets or filters for natural sources.

Yes, it’s led by certified mountaineers. Our guides are trained in high-altitude safety, and we carry oxygen, a pulse oximeter, and medical kits.

AMS is possible above 3,500 m. We acclimatize gradually and monitor your vitals. If symptoms appear, rest or descent is advised.

Strongly recommended, especially if it covers evacuation and high-altitude medical support. Though helicopter evacuation in India is rare, it's good to have a backup.

Summit day can last 10–12 hours, starting pre-dawn. Expect steep snow climbs, ridge walks, and fixed rope usage. It’s tiring but exhilarating.

At Summit Camp and during the summit attempt, temperatures can drop to -10°C to -15°C. Prepare with proper down gear and insulation.

No network after the roadhead. Guides carry radios/walkie-talkies for team communication.

There will be no expense during the trek, except for some tip for the staff at the end of the expedition. Carry ₹8,000–₹10,000 for personal expenses, snacks in Manali, offloading (if opted), or extra hotel nights.

Yes. Extra bags can be safely stored at the hotel in Manali till your return.

Safety first. If someone cannot continue, they’ll descend with a staff member. If possible, they can wait at Lady Leg or base.

Yes! All participants who reach the summit receive a Summit Certificate & Medal.

Yes. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and having a Day 8 buffer allows for a second attempt or relaxed descent. If used, the additional cost is ₹2,500.

We understand that plans can change, and we try to keep our cancellation policy fair and transparent. Depending on how close to the departure date you cancel, partial refunds are possible, and we also offer options to transfer your booking to a future trip in certain cases.
