Overview

A Beginner-Friendly Mountain Journey Designed for Learning, Growth & Discovery

The Dyalishera Bugyal Kids Trekking Experience is a guided, multi-day outdoor learning program set in the quiet, pine-lined trails of Himachal Pradesh. Created for children aged 8 to 16, it blends the thrill of Himalayan trekking with immersive nature exploration, cultural connection, and hands-on learning — all paced and supported for young participants.

Far from busy tourist trails, the Dyalishera trail offers a chance for children to move through oak forests, spot alpine wildlife, pitch tents under starlit skies, and engage in reflection, teamwork, and self-reliance. Whether it’s learning how to read a trail, understanding the rhythm of a mountain village, or simply making their own morning chai — every step is designed to teach something lasting.

Led by trained Outdoor Whisperer facilitators and experienced mountain guides, this experience is safe, structured, and highly impactful. For schools, parents, and educators seeking meaningful alternatives to passive travel or adventure tourism, Dyalishera offers something deeper: a path for children to connect with nature — and with themselves.

Itinerary

Your journey begins at Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) where our team picks you up and transfers you to a comfortable 3-star hotel in the city. The day is easy-paced but vital — participants settle in, unpack, and begin to step into the expedition mindset.

In the evening, we host ice-breakers, introductions, and a warm welcome session. You’ll meet the trek leaders and fellow teammates, get a brief on the trail ahead, and prepare mentally for the days to come. This night is about soft landings and setting the tone for shared growth.

  • 🛏️ Stay: 3-star hotel in Dehradun (triple/quad sharing)

  • 🚐 Pickup: From Dehradun airport

  • 🧭 Activities: Ice-breakers, introduction circle, team ground rules, early dinner

After breakfast, the team begins its journey from Dehradun to Karchon, a remote Himalayan village nestled near Joshimath. The drive takes 7–8 hours, climbing gradually into alpine terrain with forests and rivers unfolding at every turn.

By evening, we check into a rustic homestay in Karchon — surrounded by mountain silence and starlit skies. The evening session includes formal team formation with role assignments: Navigation Team, Cooking Team, and Campsite Incharge Team.

  • 🚐 Drive: 270–280 km | 7–8 hours

  • 🏠 Stay: Traditional homestay in Karchon

  • 🔧 Activities: Gear distribution, safety protocols, expedition briefing, task allocation

We rise early for tea and a pre-trek briefing. After packing up, the group begins a 4 km trek through dense forests of oak, spruce, and pine, with the sounds of cicadas and woodpeckers echoing through the trees.

On the trail, the Navigation Team leads, identifying terrain markers and setting pace. Once at Dhurkund Campsite, the Campsite Team sets up tents, performs medical checks, while the Cooking Team prepares evening meals. The day closes with a guided group reflection and the next day’s task rotation.

  • 🚶 Distance: ~4 km | 3–5 hours

  • 🏕️ Stay: Dhurkund forest campsite

  • 🔧 Tasks: Navigation, camp setup, cooking, medical checks, team games (if time allows)

  • 🌙 Evening: Reflection circle + next day’s task planning

This is one of the most scenic days of the trek. The team climbs 7 km through shifting forest ecosystems, moving into vibrant rhododendron territory. As altitude increases, trekkers notice a change in flower colors — a lesson in natural adaptation.

Midday activities include trail games and learning modules, conducted by the Course Instructor. Once at the breathtaking Dyalishera Bugyal (3,600 m) — nestled below a 2,000-foot granite wall — teams pitch camp, complete assigned roles, and enjoy leisure time in one of the most surreal Himalayan meadows.

  • 🚶 Distance: ~7 km | 6–7 hours

  • 🏕️ Stay: Dyalishera basecamp (alpine tents)

  • 🔧 Tasks: Navigation, camp & kitchen duties, mixed enroute activities

  • 🌸 Terrain: Forest to bugyal; visible flora transition

  • 🌙 Evening: Reflection & task reassignment for summit day

Today, we trek without heavy packs toward the Nanda Dhumti Viewpoint — a ridgeline with panoramic views of Mt. Trisul, Nanda Ghunti, Dronagiri, Kamet, Nilkanth, and Nanda Devi. Depending on the group's stamina, there’s time to reach a second viewpoint nearby.

The day balances exploration with insight. Students practice trail judgment, route decisions, and summit pacing. The instructor guides reflection activities at the summit — using nature as the blackboard.

The return to base is steady. Back at camp, everyone rotates roles, shares stories, and celebrates the day’s high point with hot food and warm laughter.

  • 🚶 Distance: ~5–6 km | 5–6 hours

  • 🏔️ Max Altitude: ~3,740 m

  • 🔧 Tasks: Light daypacks, navigation focus, on-trail learning, journaling

  • 📷 Views: Himalayan skyline, high bugyal ridges

  • 🌙 Evening: Story circle, next-day planning

Today’s descent brings closure. The team walks 10–11 km downhill, back through the forests now familiar and beloved. There are no formal tasks today — just a relaxed walk, shared stories, and a deep sense of accomplishment.

On return to Karchon, the homestay welcomes trekkers with fresh meals and rest. Evening activities include a closing ceremony, feedback sharing, and certificate distribution. A village walk and informal cultural tour close out the night with celebration and gratitude.

  • 🚶 Distance: ~10–11 km | 6–7 hours

  • 🏠 Stay: Karchon Homestay

  • 🎉 Evening: No team tasks, cultural exploration, award night, photo circle

After breakfast, the group departs for Dehradun by road. The long drive allows reflection, rest, and conversations that only trailmates can share. Upon reaching, we check into the same hotel from Day 1.

The evening is relaxed and open — a chance to journal, share photos, or explore local markets.

  • 🚐 Drive: 7–8 hours

  • 🏨 Stay: 3-star hotel in Dehradun

  • 🧘 Evening: Free time or casual city walk

Final breakfast is served at the hotel. Based on your flight schedule, we provide group airport transfers. Those with later departures may opt to shop or stroll nearby.

Every goodbye feels earned. You leave not just with gear and photos, but with real-world resilience, stronger friendships, and memories shaped by mountains.

Food & Cuisine

Meals on the Dyalishera Bugyal Trek are simple, nutritious, and prepared fresh by local cooks — designed to keep young trekkers well-fed, energized, and comfortable at altitude.

Breakfasts typically include poha, parathas, porridge, or upma with hot chai. Lunch and dinner feature staples like dal, rice, chapati, seasonal vegetables, and soups — easy on the stomach and rich in energy. In colder months, you might get mandua rotis or hot khichdi for added warmth.

Evenings are for comfort food — maggi, pakoras, or soup, shared around a tent or under the open sky. Meals are vegetarian, hygienic, and served hot at campsites or homestays.

Hydration is prioritized: hot water refills and ORS are provided daily. You’ll carry reusable bottles — no plastic waste, no unnecessary frills. Just wholesome mountain food that fuels the body, and moments of sharing that feed the soul.

Accommodation

The Dyalishera Bugyal Trek offers a mix of comfortable and immersive stays — combining warm hospitality with real mountain living.

Your journey begins and ends in a 3-star hotel in Dehradun, where participants rest after travel and prepare for the expedition. During the trek, we stay in a local homestay in Karchon (2 nights) — a traditional mountain village near Joshimath that gives students a glimpse into Himalayan culture, food, and life.

On the trail, accommodation shifts to alpine-grade expedition tents — shared by 2 to 3 trekkers per tent. Campsites are selected for safety, shelter, and views. The setup includes toilet tents, kitchen tents, and a common dining tent, with sleeping bags, foam mats, and ground insulation provided.

While there are no showers or luxuries, what you gain is unmatched: clear starry skies, the sound of pine trees in the wind, and the feeling of sleeping at over 10,000 feet — side by side with your team.

This is not five-star comfort — it’s five-billion-star experience.

Fitness & Difficulty

The Dyalishera Bugyal Trek is designed to be approachable for beginners — especially young participants, first-time trekkers, and school/youth groups. Rated 4/10 on the difficulty scale, it offers a gradual, supportive introduction to high-altitude trekking with just the right balance of challenge and comfort.

The trail progresses gently from village paths to alpine meadows, with daily trekking distances ranging from 4 to 11 km. Elevation gain is steady, with the highest point reaching 12,270 feet (3,740 m) — well within acclimatization range for most.

The route is non-technical: no ropes, no bouldering, and no river crossings. It includes forest trails, rhododendron ridges, and wide open bugyals that feel like walking through a natural amphitheater. Daily activities and team roles keep energy levels balanced — participants take breaks, stay hydrated, and rotate responsibilities to build teamwork over fatigue.

That said, a basic level of fitness is essential. We recommend a month of light cardio — brisk walking, stair-climbing, jogging, or cycling — to build stamina. Carrying a small daypack over multiple days will also help.

If you can walk 5–6 km daily with a 4–5 kg backpack and enjoy light physical activity, you’re ready for this trek. The terrain will test you just enough — and the experience will shape you far beyond the trail.

Common Questions

The Markha Valley trek is graded moderate. It’s not technically challenging, but you’ll be trekking long distances (up to 20 km/day) at altitudes ranging from 3,200m to 5,260m. It’s suitable for fit beginners and experienced trekkers alike. Regular training and good acclimatization are key to enjoying the trail.

You’ll cross Kongmaru La Pass at 5,260 meters, the highest point on this trek. It’s a steep climb and descent on either side, but it rewards you with one of the most panoramic Himalayan views in Ladakh.

Not necessarily. If you’re reasonably fit and have done a multi-day Himalayan trek before, you’re good to go. The trail is well-defined, and there’s no technical climbing involved. First-timers should train well and come prepared for high altitude.

You should be able to walk 6–7 km a day for several days, ideally with a backpack. We recommend 3–4 weeks of regular training (walking, jogging, stair climbing, or cycling). A strong cardiovascular base and endurance will help you enjoy the trail and manage the altitude better.

The best window is from mid-June to mid-September, when the weather is most stable in Ladakh. July and August are especially beautiful, with green pastures, wildflowers, and flowing streams, while September brings clear skies and colder nights.

ght to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh (IXL), arriving on Day 1 of the itinerary. From the airport, you can take a prepaid taxi or local transport to reach our designated hotel in Leh. We’ll share the hotel name and address well in advance. Participants are expected to report at the hotel by afternoon on Day 1 — rest and acclimatization begin immediately.

Yes. The entire trail passes through the Hemis National Park, one of India’s largest protected high-altitude reserves. You may spot marmots, blue sheep, ibex, golden eagles, or even signs of the elusive snow leopard.

The trail offers everything — riverbanks, rocky ridges, grazing meadows, and narrow canyons. You’ll cross streams, walk on sandy paths, occasional boulder sections, and gain serious altitude while approaching Nimaling and Kongmaru La.

The trek starts at Chilling (3,200m) and ends at Chokdo (3,900m). Both points are accessible by vehicle from Leh. We provide group transportation to and from these trailheads.

No. There is no network or internet beyond Leh. Once the trek starts, you're off-grid until you return. Use this time for a true digital detox. Our trek leaders have communication setups for emergencies.

You’ll be camping in twin-sharing tents throughout the trek. We provide high-quality tents, sleeping bags, and mats. If you prefer to stay in a local Ladakhi homestay in villages like Skiu, Markha, or Hankar, we can arrange that at an extra cost.

You’ll be staying at a 3-star hotel in Leh for 3 nights (Day 1, 2, and 7) on a twin-sharing basis, with breakfast included. The hotel has hot showers, comfortable beds, and easy access to the market.

Expect hot, vegetarian, homemade-style meals — freshly cooked at camps or served in homestays. Breakfast includes oats, parathas, or poha; lunch/dinner includes rice, dal, sabzi, roti, khichdi, soup, and sometimes dessert. We also serve tea and evening snacks. Special dietary needs can be accommodated if informed in advance.

Yes, we provide filtered and safe drinking water at all campsites. You can refill your bottle every morning and at lunch halts. You’re encouraged to carry a reusable bottle or hydration bladder.

Leh stays relatively warm (10–20°C) during the day, but temperatures drop significantly on the trek, especially at Nimaling, where it can reach -5°C to -10°C at night. During the day, it’s sunny and dry, but wind chill increases at higher altitudes.

Yes, since you're sleeping above 3,500m and trekking to 5,260m. However, the gradual ascent, acclimatization days in Leh, and careful pace help reduce risks. Our leaders monitor health daily, and we carry oximeters and a first-aid kit.

Our team is trained in basic mountain first aid and will monitor your vitals. If required, we will descend, assist with evacuation, or return to Leh. Your safety is always our first priority.

No. All camping equipment — tents, sleeping bags (sub-zero rated), mats — are provided. You only need to bring your personal trekking gear and clothing (see our full packing list).

Yes. You can pre-book offloading for the entire trek. This is ideal if you want to hike lighter or save energy for longer days like Skiu to Markha or the Kongmaru La pass crossing.

Backpack offloading is available for up to 10 kg per person. Charges are ₹400/day. You’ll still need to carry a small daypack with water, snacks, and essentials.

We set up dry pit toilet tents at campsites. In some villages, there may be basic toilets available. Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Wet wipes and biodegradable soap also come in handy.

Yes, we provide rental gear on request, including down jackets, trekking poles, headlamps, and gloves. Please let us know in advance to ensure availability.

Yes — we recommend and require participants to have outdoor travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking, accidents, and emergency evacuation. This protects both you and the team in case of emergencies.

We follow strict safety protocols, including regular health checks, use of oxygen and first aid, expert route planning, weather monitoring, and gear training. Your safety is always our top priority — even above summit success.

Yes. You can leave your extra luggage at the hotel in Leh before the trek. Just carry what’s required on the trail.

Yes. On successful completion, you’ll receive a certificate from Outdoor Whisperer
